چکیده

Optical characterization methods were applied to a series of microcrystalline silicon thin films and solar cells deposited by the very high frequency glow discharge technique. Bulk and surface light scattering effects were analyzed. A detailed theory for evaluation of the optical absorption coefficient a from transmittance, reflectance and absorptance ~with the help of constant photocurrent method! measurements in a broad spectral region is presented for the case of surface and bulk light scattering. The spectral dependence of a is interpreted in terms of defect density, disorder, crystalline/amorphous fraction and material morphology. The enhanced light absorption in microcrystalline silicon films and solar cells is mainly due to a longer optical path as the result of an efficient diffuse light scattering at the textured film surface. This light scattering effect is a key characteristic of efficient thin-film-silicon solar cells.

Optical properties of microcrystalline materials

We use optical, photocurrent and photothermal deflection spectroscopies to study defects in microcrystalline silicon Ž . mc-Si thin films and diamond layers. Enhanced light absorption in mc-Si films and solar cells is due to several contributions: light scattering, change in the optical transition probability for strained and surface atoms and residual Ž y1 amorphous fraction. Low defect densit...

Light Scattering in Microcrystalline Silicon Thin Film Cells

Different optical characterization methods were applied to a series of microcrystalline silicon thin films, either as grown, textured, or subsequently polished, mirror-like. They reveal contributions of bulk and surface light scattering effects to the phenomenon of optical absorption enhancement. The enhanced light absorption in textured layers is mainly due to a longer optical path as a result...

Study of Composition and Optical Properties of Chemically Deposited Pd-xSb2S3 Thin Films

The study reports on the effects of different concentration of palladium impurities on the compositional and optical properties of Palladium Doped Antimony Sulphide (Pd-xSb2S3) thin films grown by the chemical bath deposition method. The films were grown at room temperature and other deposition conditions such as the bath temperature, pH, complexing agents were kept constant. The concentration ...

Light trapping in silicon nanowire solar cells.

Thin-film structures can reduce the cost of solar power by using inexpensive substrates and a lower quantity and quality of semiconductor material. However, the resulting short optical path length and minority carrier diffusion length necessitates either a high absorption coefficient or excellent light trapping. Semiconducting nanowire arrays have already been shown to have low reflective losse...

Improving the optical properties of thin film plasmonic solar cells of InP absorber layer using nanowires

In this paper, a thin-film InP-based solar cell designed and simulated. The proposed InP solar cell has a periodic array of plasmonic back-reflector, which consists of a silver layer and two silver nanowires. The indium tin oxide (ITO) layer also utilized as an anti-reflection coating (ARC) layer on top. The design creates a light-trapping structure by using a plasmonic back-reflector and an an...
